On a leafy pond tucked away into a shady comer of this gorgeous edifice, the Maharaja had sailed his paper boats as a child. Today, it still stands proud, epitomizing the old world charm ofJodhpur. Built in 1663 by Maharani Hadiji, wife of former ruler Maharaja Jaswant Singh-I, Rai Ka Bagh was a favourite haunt of Maharaja Jaswant Singh II. Located close to the quaint Rai Ka Bag Station, this octagonal building was then called 'Aath Pehlu'. The walls still whisper of those proud days in the year 1883, when Swami Dayanand Saraswati came to Jodhpur and preached to the royal family in the palace. Equally hallowed were the grounds where the Maharishi addressed a public gathering.

Yesterday, Rai Ka Bagh was home to tradition. Tomorrow the complex will boast of a heritage hotel with 50 rooms, spa, club, banquets and restaurants, shopping areas, ample car parking space and an open air museum.
